Liverpool suffer double defensive blow ahead of Man City & Man United showdowns

Liverpool defenders Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez are injury doubts ahead of crucial matches against Manchester United and Manchester City.

Gomez went off at half-time, while Konate hobbled off to be replaced by Virgil Van Dijk in the second half of their Europa League clash with Sparta Prague this evening.

The defensive pair had started the match as the Reds hammered the Czech Republic side 5-1, but both players face anxious doubts ahead of this weekend’s pivotal clash with Man City.

The Merseysiders are top of the Premier League table with 63 points, one ahead of the reigning champions.

Liverpool will look to extend their lead at the summit to four when they take on Pep Guardiola’s side.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp already has several injury concerns with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alisson Becker, Ryan Gravenberch and Diogo Jota sidelined.

Curtis Jones, Jayden Danns, Stefan Bajcetic, Joel Matip and Thiago Alcantara are also missing.

Dominik Szoboszlai and Darwin Nunez have just returned from injury lay-offs, while Mohamed Salah was also in the squad.

After facing City, the Reds will go head-to-head with Manchester United in the quarter-final of the FA Cup.

United are desperate to salvage something from a poor season and have their sights set on the prestigious cup.

Despite the injuries, Liverpool ran out of convincing victors against Sparta. Alexis Mac Allister bagged an early goal and an assist to cap a lovely performance.

Nunez scored a delightful double to take his tally for the season to 16. Luiz Diaz got in on the fun, and Salah nearly made a goalscoring return but for a VAR intervention.

Szoboszlai capped off an excellent showing as they placed one foot in the quarter-final.
