Gabriel Martinelli sustains injury in Arsenal’s 5-0 win over Sheffield United ahead of crucial Champions League clash with Porto

Arsenal attacker Gabriel Martinelli sustained an injury that marred their 6-0 thrashing of Sheffield United tonight.

The Brazilian was having an excellent game before taking a knock to his ankle around the Blades’ box. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta later confirmed it was a cut.

The 22-year-old netted the third as Arsenal scored five goals in the first half of a Premier League away game for the first time in the competition’s history.

He collected a lovely cut-back from Jakub Kiwior before angling an inch-perfect shot into the back of the night.

Martinelli also assisted Kai Havertz for the fourth goal as the Gunners piled on the misery on United as an apoplectic Chris Wilder looked on.

However, Arteta will be sweating on Martinelli’s fitness ahead of their crucial Champions League fixture against FC Porto at the Emirates Stadium.

The Primeira Liga side triumphed in the first leg in Portugal, scoring a stoppage-time winner via a stunning effort from Wenderson Galeno.

The Gunners need all hands on deck against Porto next Tuesday. They will be desperate to have Martinelli fit by then.

Despite the injury, Arsenal’s goals did not run dry as they put on a clinic against the Blades.

Arsenal will back themselves to find the goals against Porto with their imperious form after winning six league games on the spin.

They have netted 31 goals in seven Premier League games in 2024. The Gunners have netted more away goals in 2024 (19 in four games) than Manchester United have all season (18 in 14 games).

Arsenal’s win over United keeps them in third place with 61 points and firmly in the title race behind Liverpool (63) and Manchester City (62).

They are building momentum ahead of what promises to be a thrilling title run-in.
