Manchester United and Newcastle United are close to agreeing a deal for sporting director Dan Ashworth, according to the Daily Mail.
United are poised to approach the Toons soon, and all parties want a swift resolution by next week.
The 52-year-old is also reportedly keen on the move, and a compensation package will pave the way for him to leave, although there is the possibility of him taking a lengthy gardening leave.
New United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS team see Ashworth as the recruitment mastermind they need.
Ashworth joined Newcastle in 2022 but has found himself stuck in a limited role at St. James’ Park. The allure of joining INEOS’ exciting project and his relationship with INEOS director of sport, Sir Dave Brailsford, are other reasons he is looking forward to the United job.
INEOS are still finalising their 25% stake in United that will see them take control of football operation.
INEOS are in charge of recruitment and consider Ashworth the ideal leader for their rebuild.
United are swiftly restructuring things in the executive offices. They recently hired chief executive Omar Berrada from Manchester City following the departure of Richard Arnold. The addition of Ashworth is another potential coup.
Ashworth will get plenty of financial backing and behind-the-scenes power. Also, his domestic expertise aligns with Ratcliffe’s desire for a British soul at United.
United want to bolster their ranks with young, homegrown talent and believe the former Brighton & Hove Albion director is their man.
If Ashworth leaves for United, Newcastle will target former Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards.
Edwards took a sabbatical after his spell with the Reds but recently returned to work.
AFC Bournemouth’s Richard Hughes is another candidate for the Newcastle job. He has been previously linked with Liverpool but could potentially reunite with Newcastle coach Eddie Howe.
