Toni Kroos set to stay at Real Madrid until 2024

Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos is on the verge of signing a new one-year deal which would see him remain at the club until 2024, according to Marca.

The 33-year-old is one of several Madrid stars currently in the final few months of their contracts after he rejected an extension from the European champions last summer.

Many of the Los Blancos faithful would have feared losing Kroos after he previously hinted at a possible retirement at the end of the current season.

“I’m definitely not a player who plays until 38,” he told Sportschau Club (h/t Daily Mail) back in 2020.

“I still have a three-and-a-half year contract until the summer of 2023 – by then, I will be 33.

“That’s a good age to start thinking about what I want without having a contract that runs for four years.

“It won’t be long then until the end of my career.”

However, Kroos is now set to continue for a further 12 months and unsurprisingly so, as he continues to deliver the goods for Carlo Ancelotti, who remains a big fan of the midfielder.

Since moving to Santiago Bernabeu from Bayern Munich in 2014, Kroos has enjoyed a trophy-laden spell in the Spanish capital, winning 19 major honours in total.

Kroos will have the opportunity to secure the only winners’ medal which he is yet to pick up as a Madrid player when they take on Osasuna in the Copa del Rey final next month.

While winning back-to-back La Liga titles is out of reach for Kroos and Madrid, another Champions League title remains a firm possibility.

Los Blancos already have one foot in the semi-finals of Europe’s premier club competition thanks to a 2-0 victory over Chelsea last Wednesday.
