The Premier League’s decision to reschedule Chelsea’s upcoming clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers for Christmas Eve has drawn criticism from the Chelsea Supporters’ Trust (CST) and the Football Supporters’ Association (FSA).
This move marks a deviation from the usual festive football calendar. The last Christmas Eve Premier League match dates back to 1995.
Originally slated for December 23, the Wolves versus Chelsea fixture has now been moved to the following day (kick-off 1.00 pm).
The CST expressed their displeasure in a strongly worded statement and raised concerns about the potential staffing issues at Molineux.
“It is totally unacceptable that Wolves v Chelsea has been scheduled for Christmas Eve,” the CST stated (via social media platform X).
The FSA denounced the Premier League’s decision as ‘shocking scheduling’.
They offered their unwavering support to the supporters’ trust of both clubs in their shared opposition to Christmas Eve fixtures.
The Wolves Supporters Trust previously voiced their dissatisfaction with the scheduling, highlighting the ‘complete lack of consideration and respect for fans’.
This sentiment has now been mirrored by the CST, FSA and other fan groups who believe the festive season should be for celebration rather than one marked by disruptions and inconveniences.
The Premier League’s decision has sparked a heated debate about balancing the demands of television broadcasters against the wellbeing of fans who form the lifeblood of the sport.
