Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson delivers verdict on his Save of the Month winner

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson has won August 2023’s Castrol Save of the Month award for his sensational stop to deny Newcastle United’s Miguel Almiron.

Jurgen Klopp’s men were down a goal and reduced to ten men after Virgil van Dijk’s expulsion when the 30-year-old pulled off a fabulous save to thwart the Paraguayan’s thunderous volley from the edge of the box.

Everyone at St James’ Park could already see the ball in the back of the net, but the Brazilian stopper flew through the air to deflect Almiron’s attempt onto the crossbar before clearing the rebound off the line.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe described Alisson’s reaction as one of the best saves he has seen live after his side spurned a half-time lead in a 2-1 defeat, courtesy of Darwin Nunez’s late brace.

The ex-Roma keeper’s moment of magic between the sticks proved a game-changing factor as Liverpool turned the match on its head against the odds.

It has rightfully earned Alisson the flattering award for the best save of the month in the Premier League, with the Brazil international ranking it among his most impressive stops in the Reds jersey.

“It would be [one of] my best saves for Liverpool,” Alisson said after the ceremony, as relayed by the official Premier League website.

“There are a few. The one against Norwich as well. It was a one-on-one at the end of the match. I think I’d put those two at the top.”

Asked to draw a comparison between the feeling he gets after pulling off a vital save and the one he had after scoring an iconic stoppage-time winner against West Bromwich Albion, Alisson added: “It doesn’t compare.

“When you make a save, even if it’s a really good one, you have to stay focused. You cannot celebrate too much because ten seconds after you have to react again.”

Alisson will be in goal when Wolverhampton Wanderers and Liverpool lock horns at Molineux on Saturday afternoon.
