Barcelona have set their sights on Athletic Bilbao’s talented forward Nico Williams, claims Diario Sport.
The Spanish youngster’s current deal expires next summer, and Barca have been alerted of his situation.
The Basque outfit want to extend Williams’ contract, but Barcelona have initiated contact with his agent, Felix Tainta, to discuss a potential deal.
The 21-year-old had his breakout campaign last season, becoming an integral member of Athletic Club’s squad alongside his brother Inaki.
Nico racked up nine goals and six assists for Ernesto Valverde’s side across all competitions last term, and his talent also helped him make it to Spain’s 2022 World Cup Squad.
He has already earned ten senior caps and was impressive in the recent European Qualifying games.
The report also highlights the excellent relationship he has struck up with Barcelona players Alejandro Balde, Gavi and Lamine Yamal with the Spanish national team.
Athletic Club are looking to hand him a three-year extension, but there has been no significant development in the renewal talks.
This is another excellent market opportunity for Barca, as they can get their hands on a highly talented prospect for free amid their well-documented financial crisis.
The Spanish winger could easily be tempted to join the Blaugrana, where he has greater chances of winning titles and playing in the Champions League.
A move to the Catalonian capital would help him sustain his place in the national team.
Following the departures of Ansu Fati and Ousmane Dembele this summer, Barca have been lacking prominent wingers in the squad, and Williams could be an excellent option.
Barca manager Xavi is also a big supporter of homegrown talents, as evidenced by the resurgence of La Masia academy under his reign and his preference for players such as Pedri and Oriol Romeu.
Williams’ profile will appeal to Xavi, who prefers natural wingers in his system.
Barca are also reportedly planning moves for RB Leipzig’s Dani Olmo and Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva next summer.
