Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman has criticised Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch and Bayer Leverkusen wing-back Jeremie Frimpong for turning down call-ups from the Under-21 team.
Both players are already senior internationals for the Oranje but did not get calls to the senior team.
Gravenberch accepted the call earlier this summer as he played for his nation at the U21 European Championship but has turned down the opportunity this time to focus on his club.
Frimpong’s case has been a hot topic for a while now. Despite bagging eight goals and seven assists in 34 Bundesliga games last season, Koeman has been snubbing him.
He has continued his phenomenal form from last season, notching one goal and three assists in three league appearances this term.
Koeman announced his squad today ahead of their 2024 European Championship qualifiers with Greece and Ireland.
The manager also discussed his selection and the Gravenberch and Frimpong omission.
He said: “We don’t like it when players refuse to play for the Under-21 team.
“Nigel de Jong (technical director KNVB) has spoken with Jeremie Frimpong about this. He still wants to play for us, but we decided he will not be called up.
“You can see it as punishment. I believe you are obliged to play for your country.
“We are not happy with Ryan Gravenberch refusing to play for his country.”
Under-21 manager Michael Reiziger also slammed the Liverpool man for his decision to stay behind.
However, while it is easy to criticise the choices made by these players, it is essential to consider their circumstances.
Frimpong’s exceptional form for Leverkusen, who currently lead the Bundesliga, makes a strong case for his inclusion in the senior squad.
This argument gains further weight when compared to the selection of players like Chelsea full-back Ian Maatsen, who has spent most of the season on the bench.
As for Gravenberch, his recent transfer to a new club and his determination to impress his new manager, Jurgen Klopp, should not overshadow his previous commitment to the U21 team during the Euros.
