Messi fails to score as Inter Miami’s nine-game winning run ends

Lionel Messi has been unstoppable since he joined Major League Soccer club Inter Miami on a free transfer this summer.

The Argentine made a stunning debut by scoring an injury-time winner against Cruz Azul before netting braces in each of his next three matches.

The 36-year-old continued his brilliance in recent weeks, leading the Herons to the Leagues Cup triumph and also to the final of the US Open Cup.

However, he failed to fire against Nashville as Miami’s nine-game winning streak ended last night.

It was a frustrating outing for Gerardo Martino’s sid,e who couldn’t breach their opponents’ defence at the DRV PNK Stadium.

The hosts dominated possession but failed to create many goalscoring opportunities.

Messi had chances from set-pieces but was unable to break the deadlock.

Miami players showed their frustration, with Jordi Alba angrily booting the ball away at half-time.

Sergio Busquets was booked after a reckless tackle, while Messi was also involved in an altercation with Nashville’s Jack Maher.

The latest result is a big blow to Inter’s hopes of making it to the MLS play-offs.

They are 14th in the Eastern Conference standings, with 22 points from 24 matches.

The Herons will return to action this weekend when they take on Los Angeles FC at the BMO Stadium.
