Chelsea have set their sights on highly-rated Manchester City talent Cole Palmer in a bid to bolster their attacking options, claims Fabrizio Romano.
Despite taking their expenditure on new players to over £350 million this summer, it was obvious the Blues were not done with their spending spree, with Mauricio Pochettino requesting an extra attacker.
Multiple reports claimed Chelsea were eyeing several players, but they have kept the identity of their targets under wraps.
However, the Blues see Palmer as an ideal candidate to add depth to their forward line and are poised to open talks with their Manchester counterparts over a potential deal.
The 21-year-old has struggled to establish himself as a key part of Pep Guardiola’s plans since earning a first-team call-up from the academy in 2021.
He made 25 appearances across all competitions last term but struggled to hit his stride, contributing just a goal and an assist – although he only made his way into Guardiola’s starting line-up seven times.
He kicked off the 2023/24 campaign well, rifling home a beautiful curler in the Community Shield before heading home a vital goal in the UEFA Super Cup that sent the Cityzens to a penalty shoot-out victory.
However, his heroics on the big stage only afforded him ten minutes of action in the Premier League curtain raiser against Burnley, and he has failed to make an appearance for the treble winners since.
Palmer’s long-term future at the Etihad Stadium has made the headlines this summer, with the youngster publicly admitting his desire for regular first-team action.
Man City have responded by spending £55m to sign highly-rated Belgian youngster Jeremy Doku from Stade Rennais, further casting doubt on Palmer’s future at the club.
It remains to be seen if the Premier League title holders will be willing to strengthen a direct rival with one of their highly-rated youngsters, but Chelsea have been credited with a legitimate interest in Palmer.
