Aston Villa agree deal to sign Clement Lenglet from Barcelona

Aston Villa have agreed a deal with Barcelona to sign defender Clement Lenglet, per Fabrizio Romano

The French centre-half will return to the Premier League after spending last season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur.

He made 26 league appearances for Spurs but returned to Barca after the loan spell ended.

Aston Villa have come forward with an offer for Lenglet following an injury to Tyrone Mings that will rule him out for a chunk of the season.

Mings pulled up in the first half of Villa’s opening game against Newcastle United, which they lost 5-1. He will require surgery and miss over six months of action.

New signing Pau Torres is expected to compete with Lenglet for the starting spot.

Torres’ tenure at Villa did not get off to a good start as he looked poor after Mings went off in the loss to Newcastle.

He improved against Everton and Burnley and looked imperious against Hibernian in Villa’s Europa Conference League qualifying clash.

Having Torres and Lenglet will be a massive boost for manager Unai Emery for the new season, especially after Mings’ injury.

Villa have been decisive in the transfer market, signing Torres, Moussa Diaby, Youri Tielemans and Nicolo Zaniolo.

Diaby has been one of the best signings of the summer, bagging two goals and one assist in three appearances.

Tielemans and Zaniolo are still struggling to adapt to their new environment, but there is plenty of time for them to kick on.

Lenglet will now become Villa’s fifth summer signing, but they could look to make some more additions before the close of the transfer window on Friday.
