Morning Mix: Let’s see if the Kompany fuss is justified, spare a thought for Everton fans

Friday is here again which means it’s time for ‘Morning Mix’ – our weekly football column with a bit of music thrown in for good measure.

We look at two major talking points for the weekend ahead and point you in the direction of some of the best football stories elsewhere on the internet.

We also offer a top tune recommendation to get you in the mood for the weekend and what to watch out for over the coming days. Let’s get this party started!

Let’s see if the Kompany fuss is justified

Vincent Kompany was touted as a potential future Manchester City manager after guiding Burnley back into the Premier League last season.

The hyperbole continued during the close season before the Clarets were given a reality check by the reigning champions on the opening weekend.

The home game against Aston Villa on Sunday will be a more useful yardstick for Burnley’s chances of being competitive in the top flight this season.

Kompany has once again received significant backing from the board during the summer transfer window – it’s time to see what he’s made of now.

Spare a thought for Everton fans

While most Premier League clubs have been merrily splashing the cash this summer, Everton manager Sean Dyche has been rummaging in the bargain basement.

Following the collapse of investment talks with MSP Sports Capital, the club has been forced to look elsewhere for a new cash injection.

While owner Farhad Moshiri will argue differently, his time in charge of the club has been shambolic and things will not improve while he remains in charge.

Everton fans are a loyal bunch, and it’s sad to see their club in its current state. Unless the situation is resolved quickly, their time in the top flight will end.

The week that was

Today’s top tune

Ten months have passed since we gave Tom Grennan a shout-out in the Morning Mix column.

The minute this stunning performance of ‘Crown Your Love’ landed in our inbox, we knew the time was right for another. Wow!

What to watch this week

Newcastle United demolished Aston Villa on the opening weekend before running Man City close at the Etihad Stadium last Saturday.

Their home game against Liverpool on Sunday will be a useful indicator of each club’s hopes of finishing in the top four this season.

A final Morning Mix thought

Any West Ham United fans who thought Declan Rice leaving the club was bad news will have woken up feeling pretty happy last Monday.

The Hammers were excellent against Chelsea, producing a performance that demonstrated they have quickly moved on from the Rice era.

Edson Alvarez and James Ward-Prowse will prove to be excellent additions, while the imminent arrival of Mohammed Kudus further strengthens their squad. Declan who?
