Marc-Andre ter Stegen close to penning new deal with Barcelona

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen is on the verge of signing a contract extension, as per Diario Sport

With his current contract expiring in 2025, the German shot-stopper will put pen to paper on a five-year deal until 2028.

Ter Stegen has been peerless at Barca since his transfer in 2014, clocking up 379 appearances – the highest among the current squad.

The 31-year-old had suffered an evident decline in form before re-establishing his status as one of the best keepers in the world last season.

Ter Stegen propelled the Catalan giants to their first La Liga title after four years and also broke multiple records along the way.

He registered an astonishing 26 clean sheets, surpassing Claudio Bravo’s tally by a Barca player and also equalling the record for the most in a single season in La Liga history.

The German international’s purple patch has continued, as he has already garnered two clean sheets in two La Liga games this season, including an outstanding performance against Cadiz over the weekend.

Being the vice-captain, Ter Stegen has also grown into one of the most influential members in the squad.

Inaki Pena is serving as the understudy to Ter Stegen, and it looks impossible for him to dethrone the German anytime soon.

Ter Stegen will be hoping to end Barca’s hoodoo in the Champions League this season, and he also has his eyes set on the 2024 European Championships with the German national team.

Barca opened their account in La Liga with a 2-0 win against Cadiz, with Pedri and Ferran Torres netting the winning goals.

The Blaugrana will travel to Villarreal for a tough away fixture this weekend.
