Nottingham Forest have sealed a deal to sign Argentina international right-back Gonzalo Montiel from Sevilla for £10 million, per Sky Sports.
Montiel’s impending move to England marks the beginning of a new chapter in his career as he prepares to undergo medical examinations with his soon-to-be new club.
The Argentine defender made 43 appearances for Sevilla last season, contributing a goal and three assists.
He will lend Forest much-needed depth in the right-back position, especially given that Serge Aurier is the only option they have down that flank.
The 26-year-old’s accomplishments extend beyond his club exploits, as he etched his name into football history in December 2022.
Montiel’s composure from the penalty spot secured victory for Argentina against France in the World Cup final, and he replicated this feat in the Europa League final for Sevilla against AS Roma.
His penalty-taking prowess was also evident in the UEFA Super Cup clash against Manchester City.
Montiel’s journey from River Plate to Sevilla in 2021 has seen him amass an impressive 72 appearances for the Spanish club.
This acquisition comes on the heels of Forest’s moves in the summer transfer window, which have seen the arrivals of Anthony Elanga, Ola Aina, Matt Turner and the permanent signing of Chris Wood.
As the new Premier League season unfolds, Forest are keen to make their mark and stay in the top flight.
After an initial setback with a 2-1 defeat against Arsenal, the team rallied to secure a 2-1 victory over Sheffield United.
Following Montiel’s addition to the squad, Forest fans will be more optimistic about the team’s prospects. They needed full-backs and have now added one with plenty of experience.
They still need to bring in reinforcements at left-back with the club eyeing Arsenal’s Nuno Tavares, who is also a target for Aston Villa.
First-choice left-back Harry Toffolo is under investigation for breaching betting rules.
