Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino provided a reassuring update on the injury status of captain Reece James.
The 23-year-old suffered a hamstring injury, prompting concerns about a prolonged absence.
However, Pochettino quashed fears of a long-term setback, stating that James will be out of action for a few weeks rather than months.
Pochettino emphasised his determination to aid James in rehabilitation, hoping to end the defender’s streak of injuries that made him miss half of Chelsea’s matches last season.
Despite expressing his sadness over losing his captain temporarily, Pochettino remained optimistic about James’ return, highlighting that the injury was not a major issue.
He said (via Chelsea’s official website): “Although it’s a sad moment because he is our captain and was brimming with energy, we will assess his progress day by day.
“With the club’s support, he will return stronger than before.”
While James is on the mend, Chelsea’s line-up will include new signing Malo Gusto, who showed promise during pre-season matches. He will deputise for the England international.
The club’s medical staff will continue to monitor the injuries of other key players, including Christopher Nkunku, Trevoh Chalobah, Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile, Armando Broja and Marcus Bettinelli.
Addressing Chelsea’s transfer plans, Pochettino confirmed the club’s plans to strengthen their squad with additional signings before the transfer window closes.
They need to sign a goalkeeper and an attacker, but Pochettino made it clear that they are not seeking an out-and-out striker to nurture the potential of Armando Broja.
“We believe in Armando Broja – he has the potential to be an important striker for Chelsea, and we won’t hinder his progress by signing players that may block his path,” Pochettino said.
