Chelsea and PSG alerted to Gavi’s position after Xavi prefers ‘alternatives’ in Barcelona midfield

Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain are attentive to the situation of Barcelona midfielder Gavi, according to SPORT.

Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez has a preferred midfield with Pedri, Ilkay Gundogan and Frenkie De Jong his first choice.

He plans to use Oriol Romeu in games where they need a holding midfielder. Chelsea and PSG are looking to take advantage by signing Gavi.

He was on the bench for Barca’s first game of the season – a 0-0 draw with Getafe. He came on and played only a few minutes.

His meagre minutes could be down to injury as he resumed pre-season preparations with a knock.

However, it is worth noting that Gavi only just signed a new deal until 2026 this summer, making a transfer difficult.

The new deal reportedly has a hefty release clause which will cause PSG and Chelsea to rethink their positions.

The 19-year-old broke through from Barcelona’s La Masia academy two years ago, showing their accustomed technical proficiency while adding toughness to his game.

He became a mainstay in the first team last season. He has already accrued 97 appearances for the Barca senior team, bagging five goals and 13 assists.

Gavi has earned 21 caps for Spain since debuting in 2021, netting three goals.

He won the Golden Boy Award last year for his performances and is considered one of the most exciting talents in the game.

Despite Chelsea and PSG’s interest in Gavi, he will likely stay at Barcelona beyond this summer.

However, the situation may change if he continues to struggle for game time.
