Man City youngster Rico Lewis pens new five-year deal

Manchester City have announced a contract extension for youngster Rico Lewis.

The 18-year-old has inked a new five-year contract, pledging his allegiance to City until 2028.

Lewis progressed through City’s youth system, carving his path to the first team under the astute guidance of Pep Guardiola.

He had a year left on his current contract, but his remarkable performance in the club’s treble-winning 2022/23 season led to a well-deserved extension on improved terms.

After turning heads during the pre-season tour last year, Lewis left an indelible mark on Guardiola’s radar, culminating in an impressive 23 appearances in his breakthrough campaign.

Lewis said (via City’s official website): “It’s been an unbelievable year for me, and now to sign this contract is a dream come true.

“As a City fan, I can remember watching us winning trophies when I was young, and it’s the only place I’ve wanted to be.

“To know I’m going to be here until 2028 is fantastic, and I can’t wait to keep working and improving.

“The fans have been brilliant too, and I’ll give everything for them and the club to try to keep us being successful.”

City director of football Txiki Begiristain described Lewis as an intelligent, mature and reliable player. He praised the youngster’s willingness to learn from Guardiola.

Begiristain said he is proud of Lewis’ journey and cannot wait to see how the future unfolds.

Lewis started City’s first game of the Premier League season against Burnley and will hope to remain in the first team for subsequent matches.
