Ajax open talks to re-sign Argentine defender Nicolas Tagliafico

Ajax have initiated talks over the potential return of Lyon defender Nicolas Tagliafico, claims De Telegraaf.

After spending four years at Ajax, the Argentine defender joined Les Gones in a deal worth around €4 million last summer.

The Eredivisie giants have held talks with Taglaifiaco’s entourage, and the player is willing to move back to the Johan Cruyff Arena.

The 30-year-old was a permanent fixture in Laurent Blanc’s side last season, bagging one goal and four assists in 38 appearances in all competitions.

Despite not enjoying much success with Les Gones, Tagliafico had a memorable run at the 2022 World Cup, playing an instrumental role in Argentina winning the title.

He was also on target in the league opener against Strasbourg last night, but Lyon lost the game 2-1.

Tagliafico’s time in France hasn’t panned out as he would have desired, with Lyon currently going through a crisis on and off the pitch.

He has opened the door for a return to Amsterdam, but it remains to be seen whether the Ligue 1 outfit are willing to do business with Ajax.

Ajax head coach Maurice Steijn wants to strengthen the left-back position as he feels both Anass Salah-Eddine and Owen Wijndal aren’t up to the mark.

The Amsterdam giants are also keeping tabs on Royal Antwerp’s young Argentine left-back Gaston Avila as an alternative option if they fail in Tagliafico’s pursuit.

The 21-year-old is valued at around €12 million.

Ajax are closing in on the signing of striker Chuba Akpom after reaching an agreement with Middlesbrough.

Steijn’s men thrashed Heracles 4-1 in their opening league game on Saturday.
