Eddie Howe issues update on Newcastle United summer transfer plans

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has issued an update on the club’s transfer plans ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

The Magpies are well on course to qualify for next season’s Champions League and will look to bolster their squad to cope with the added demands of continental football.

While Newcastle will reportedly have a £150 million budget to work with next summer if they secure a return to Europe’s premier club competition, Howe has stated they will be cautious in doing business.

“An overhaul of the squad is very difficult to do anyway – it’s almost impossible in this day and age with the prices of players,” Howe said, as relayed by The Athletic.

“We’re not going to have an unlimited budget – we’re going to have to be very smart with what we do.

“Financial fair play will still be there and forcing us to work in a certain way.

“I think it is the best way to work – we have to make smart decisions – we have to bring in the right players, not just any players.

“You want a balance. Ideally, you need a mixture of signings in any window, but it won’t be an overhaul of the squad – we will try and be very selective over what we do.”

Despite Howe’s comments, a highly active summer transfer window is expected at St James’ Park as Newcastle have money to spend.

With just seven games left to play this term, Newcastle will be aiming to cap off what has been a fine campaign by cementing their place in the top four.

Next up for the Tyneside-based outfit is a trip to Goodison Park to face relegation-threatened Everton tomorrow.
