Marcus Rashford targets Wayne Rooney’s all-time Man Utd record

Manchester United talisman Marcus Rashford wants to surpass Wayne Rooney’s all-time goalscoring record for the club after committing his long-term future to Old Trafford.

After inking a new lucrative five-year deal worth around £300,000-per-week, the forward is brimming with confidence and ready for the upcoming season.

Rashford has become a key figure in the Red Devils ranks, netting 123 goals in 359 appearances.

His meteoric rise has cemented his status as one of United’s brightest stars, and with Rooney’s milestone of 253 goals within reach, Rashford’s ambition knows no bounds.

In an exclusive interview with Gary Neville, Rashford opened up about his aspirations and revealed the pivotal role that Rooney played in motivating him to pursue the record.

Rashford told The Overlap: “Hopefully, I will [break Wayne Rooney’s all-time United goal record].

“You never know what’s going to happen, but I’m all about scoring goals and trying to make assists. There’s a chance that it can happen. I’ve spoken to Wazza about it – he wants me to do it.

“He said it would be good for me to do it as I’ve grown up at the club. Hopefully, I get the opportunity to try and make it happen.”

Rashford’s determination is fuelled by a remarkable 2022/23 campaign, where he notched 30 goals and ten assists in 56 appearances.

Emboldened by his success, the English forward is ready to embrace a new challenge set by United manager Erik ten Hag, who challenged him to reach 40 goals this season.

“Before last season, I always aimed for 20 goals – a good benchmark for a winger,” Rashford added.

“But this season, I’ve hit 30. We have to try and push it now. I believe in myself, and if I stay injury-free, I know I’m capable of reaching that target.”
