Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli are now on the brink of finalising a €15 million transfer for Barcelona midfielder Franck Kessie, according to The Athletic.
Al Ahli have already signed Riyad Mahrez, Roberto Firmino, Edouard Mendy and Allan Saint-Maximin this summer.
They are about to add Kessie, who had not featured in Barcelona’s last two pre-season games.
After unsuccessful negotiations last month, talks recommenced following the conclusion of the Catalan club’s pre-season tour.
The 26-year-old Ivory Coast international is ready to embark on a new career chapter with the Middle Eastern club.
Kessie had considerable interest in Italy, where he had spent several years at Atalanta and AC Milan. Juventus wanted him and were considering a move because coach Massimiliano Allegri is a fan.
However, the player did not want to return to Serie A after leaving Milan on a free transfer to join Barcelona last summer.
Premier League clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur, also expressed interest in securing his services, but they have missed out.
Kessie’s decision to move was fuelled by the prospect of reduced playing time at Barcelona due to the arrival of Ilkay Gundogan on a free transfer from Manchester City.
He was already dissatisfied with his limited minutes during his debut season at the Spanish club. Kessi embraced the chance for a fresh start after Al-Ahli met his wage demands.
This impending transfer follows Ousmane Dembele’s imminent move to Paris Saint-Germain.
Kessie’s exit will undoubtedly leave a void in Barcelona’s midfield as they do not have anyone with his profile, but they will be confident they can cope without him.
