Tottenham close to signing Blackburn defender Ashley Phillips for £3m

Tottenham Hotspur are close to signing Blackburn Rovers defender Ashley Phillips for £3 million, according to the Evening Standard.

The centre-back will undergo his medical in the United Kingdon before joining the Spurs squad on their pre-season tour in Asia.

Phillips is one of the top players to have emerged from the Blackburn youth academy in recent years.

He made his competitive debut last season at Ewood Park, starting the League Cup game against Hartlepool United in August.

The 18-year-old made 14 appearances in all competitions for Jon Dahl Tomasson’s side, who narrowly missed out on the Championship play-offs.

The young defender has the distinction of representing England at different youth levels, making his debut for the Under-18 side just last month.

Rovers would have liked to keep Phillips, but joining a Premier League club is a tempting proposition for the teenager.

However, he is unlikely to feature for the first team and may have made the move too early in his career.

Tottenham need defensive reinforcements after conceding 63 goals in the league last term – more than Everton, West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Manager Ange Postecoglou is reportedly keen to add a senior centre-back to his squad, with Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba and Wolfsburg’s Micky van de Ven on their radar.
