Ricky Massara in talks with Napoli over the sporting director role

Napoli have former AC Milan executive Ricky Massara in their sights for the sporting director role following the departure of Cristiano Giuntoli.

Giuntoli has parted ways with the Partenopei after eight years to become the new sporting director of Juventus.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis met Massara in Rome last week and proposed a long-term deal.

Massara was recently relieved of his duties as sporting director by AC Milan alongside technical director Paolo Maldini.

The drastic decisions were taken by Milan owner Gerry Cardinale, who is planning to embark on a new era at the San Siro.

The Serie A champions have also been linked with Igli Tare, who recently quit his sporting director role at Lazio after 15 years.

Massara is reportedly evaluating Napoli’s offer, and De Laurentiis sees him as the ideal man to oversee the club from where Giuntoli left off.

The Partenopei’s new manager Rudi Garcia has previously worked with Massara at AS Roma, and the Frenchman is now pushing for a reunion.

The 54-year-old strengthened his reputation during his four-year stint at Milan, with his eye for shrewd signings helping Rossoneri return to their best.

Napoli created huge expectations after their Serie A triumph last season, and Garcia has a massive task of filling the shoes of his predecessor Luciano Spalletti.

The Partenopei have lost their best defender Kim Min-jae to Bayern Munich and are trying hard to keep hold of star striker Victor Osimhen, who has attracted interest from several European heavyweights.
