Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson was considering an offer from the Saudi Pro League this summer. But the player has decided to stay put, according to Ben Jacobs.
The England international was subject to interest from Al-Ettifaq, and he was considering taking the offer for a big payday.
Henderson was to decide his future as he pondered whether to leave Liverpool and end his 12-year stay at the club.
The Saudi club did not made an offer for the Liverpool captain, but the Reds were aware of the interest from the Middle East.
However, Henderson has decided to stay at Liverpool and will continue with them next season.
Steven Gerrard is the manager of Al-Ettifaq. He was leading the charge to sign Henderson, who has already seen his former teammate Roberto Firmino move to the Gulf nation.
Several players have left Europe for Saudi Arabia and more will follow. Henderson will not be part of them after deciding against the transfer.
The 33-year-old still has two years left on his deal at the Merseyside club, but they are undergoing a midfield revamp. This situation forced the England international to consider his position.
Liverpool have already signed Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton & Hove Albion for around £35 million. They have also added Austrian playmaker Dominick Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig.
Both players will likely take starting spots and push Henderson down the pecking order. The former Sunderland man was considering these factors in his decision-making.
However, Henderson decided to stay after considering the impact on his prospects with the national team. The 2024 European Championship is on the horizon.
The Sunderland-born midfielder will continue his storied journey that has seen him lift every available trophy with the Reds.
Also, Henderson’s decision will delight Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp. Klopp will have the experienced midfielder around after losing trusted general James Milner.
