Matt Doherty set to return to Wolves

Wolverhampton Wanderers are working to bring Matt Doherty back to the club this summer, according to talkSPORT.

The 31-year-old spent ten years at the Midlands club, bagging 28 goals and 41 assists in 302 appearances for the club.

Doherty helped the club win promotion to the top flight and played for them in the Europa League. His experience would be invaluable to them.

The Republic of Ireland international moved to Tottenham Hotspur for around £13 million in 2020. He made 71 appearances for the club, netting three goals.

Doherty terminated his contract with Spurs to join Atletico Madrid in January but is now close to returning to Wolves.

His spell in Spain was a forgettable experience, as he only made two appearances for Los Rojiblancos. Both came from the bench as he struggled to earn Diego Simeone’s trust.

Wolves want to sign Doherty to provide cover for Nelson Semedo. The Portuguese defender is the only recognised right-back on their books and needs someone to provide competition.

Doherty is a versatile player who can play at left-back and through the middle. He will be a useful option for Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui.

The Spaniard want to further imprint his ideas on the team ahead of next season.

Doherty reportedly had offers from other Premier League clubs and the Saudi Pro League but wants to return to Molineux.

Wolves recently sold Nathan Collins to Brentford for £23 million and need defensive reinforcements.
