Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti has emerged as a primary target for Atletico Madrid, according to Marca.
There have been growing speculation that Verratti has become unsettled at the French capital following increased criticism from the French press and part of the PSG fan base.
The 30-year-old is currently the longest-serving player on PSG’s roster after joining the club from Pescara in 2012.
But his 11-year association with Ligue 1 giants could end amid rumours linking the Italian midfielder with a summer exit.
Atletico manager Diego Simeone is eager to bolster his midfield ranks and provide competition for Koke in the pivot role. He has set his sights on Verratti.
The Italy international midfielder is also subject to interest from clubs in his own country amid reports that AS Roma were trying to convince him to switch to the Stadio Olimpico.
Verratti has also been linked with Juventus, while the midfielder has also been courted by Al-Hilal, who have a significant interest in luring the player to Saudi Arabia.
PSG are currently embroiled in a major squad overhaul, with several signings and departures expected this summer. But it remains to be seen if Les Parisien will sanction an exit for Verratti.
New manager Luis Enrique is eager to work with the former Pescara man, and Atletico will not make their move until PSG are open to doing business.
Atletico have other players that can add quality to their midfield ranks on their radar, including Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
Spurs are open to parting ways with the Danish defensive midfielder this summer, but Atletico are reportedly baulking over their asking price.
Fiorentina’s wantaway midfielder Sofyan Amrabat is also on Atletico’s shortlist, with La Viola reportedly willing to sanction a sale if a bid of around €30 million arrives.
