Former Juventus chairman Andrea Agnelli handed a 16-month ban

Former Juventus chairman Andrea Agnelli has been hit with a 16-month ban and a €60,000 fine by an Italian football court.

The punishment relates to a case over irregularities in the club’s payments to players, according to Reuters.

Agnelli served as Juve’s chairman for over a decade but announced his resignation last November following the financial scandal.

Juventus recently agreed to pay a fine of €718,000 and not challenge a ten-point penalty for the past Serie A season, in a settlement arrangement with Italy’s football authorities.

The club were investigated by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) over allegations of false accounting and market manipulation.

Investigators found that players had been paid off the books despite Juventus claiming they had relinquished their salaries for four months during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Agnelli was a key component of the club’s success in recent years but became widely derided for his involvement in the ill-fated European Super League (ESL).

He resigned from his chairman role at European Club Association and left the UEFA Executive Committee to become the vice-chairman of the proposed breakaway league last year.

However, the plans collapsed after fans across Europe rallied against the idea, forcing the majority of clubs to withdraw from the ESL.
