Ange Postecoglou left Harry Kane’s future open for interpretation during his first press conference as the new Tottenham Hotspur manager.
The former Celtic boss assumed managerial reins in north London at the end of last season despite ‘not’ being given any assurances from Spurs that their talisman will be part of his squad in 2023/24.
“No, I haven’t had any assurances and I wouldn’t expect any,” Postecoglou said (via the Daily Mail).
“You’re never dealing in definites with this kind of thing. What I know right now is Harry is part of this squad and looking forward to coming back.
“I don’t think it’s my role to sit there and treat people in a manner because of their circumstances. I treat everyone the same.
“Harry is already an important figure in the history of this football club. He’s one of the premier players in the world. I want him here and I want to make this club successful. I’m certain he wants that as well.”
Down to the final 12 months of his contract at Tottenham, Kane has become a top target for Bayern Munich to replace Robert Lewandowski this summer.
Spurs rejected the Bavarians’ opening bid for the England captain worth €70 million as Daniel Levy still harbours faint hopes of extending his superstar’s deal.
Real Madrid’s withdrawal from the race to sign Kane seemed to have benefited Spurs’ effort to retain the 29-year-old’s services, but they’re not out of the woods yet.
The perennial Bundesliga champions won’t give up just as easily, as they’re said to have pieced together an improved offer to persuade the Tottenham chief to let Kane move overseas.
While the Londoners are expected to reject Bayern’s new proposal, they’re seemingly facing another summer-long fight to keep hold of the most prolific striker in modern Premier League history.
Kane ideally wants to stay in his home country to break Alan Shearer’s goalscoring record.
However, Levy is reluctant to negotiate his sale to fellow English rivals, which rules Manchester United out of the picture.
There’s still plenty of time left for Bayern to get the deal over the line, and Postecoglou’s best hope of holding on to Kane could be the player’s wish to continue in the Premier League.
