The Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman has delivered his verdict on the speculation surrounding the long-term future of his compatriot Xavi Simons.
The former Barcelona tactician has advised the versatile 20-year-old forward to remain at PSV Eindhoven this summer despite concrete interest from his former club Paris Saint-Germain.
The record Ligue 1 holders have decided to activate their €6 million buy-back clause to lure the highly-rated Dutchman back to Parc des Princes just one year after he left on a free transfer.
Simons, who was handed his senior international debut at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, has the final say on the potential transfer. But the youngster has yet to green-light the operation.
Since Koeman replaced Louis van Gaal, Simons has slowly become a regular for the Netherlands senior side, having made four appearances under the 60-year-old’s leadership.
Koeman has seen first-hand just how talented Simons is. He has advised his countryman to shun PSG’s advances and remain at the Philips Stadion this summer amid fears that he could struggle for playing time in the French capital.
“Xavi Simons is a good boy,” Koeman told Mundo Deportivo. “He called me this summer to talk to me about his future. It’s important that he has to play.
“He did a good job playing for PSV, and I hope he stays there because he plays everything.
“In a stronger team, he doesn’t play much. For a youngster, you have to find the best way to exploit. He’s a great player, and he’ll be a great player.”
While Koeman is not far from the truth, PSG currently are in the process of a massive squad rebuild.
Les Parisiens desperately need someone to lead the line, especially with Kylian Mbappe poised to leave the club.
The Frenchman’s relationship with the PSG hierarchy has deteriorated since he opted against triggering the extension clause in his contract.
