Since Kylian Mbappe expressed a desire not to extend his contract with Paris Saint-Germain any further than 2024, his relationship with the club has deteriorated rapidly.
Mbappe has a clause in his current deal that allows him to extend his stay at Parc des Princes until 2025, but he informed the club about his decision not to renew in a letter signed in July last year.
However, his decision was not received well by the French giants, who had hoped to build a strong team capable of competing in the Champions League around their superstar forward.
According to L’Equipe, Mbappe sent a second letter to PSG explaining in detail why he decided not to trigger the extension clause, but that has done little to quell the now public feud between both parties.
During Luis Enrique’s presentation as the club’s new head coach, PSG chief Nasser Al-Khelaifi made his position on Mbappe’s future very clear – extend or leave this summer.
While the club is open to mending the strained relationship with the 24-year-old, they would rather recoup funds from his potential departure, as losing a player of his quality for free will be nothing short of catastrophic.
PSG have accused Mbappe of being ‘insincere’ and expressing behaviour that is ‘a huge disservice’ to the club after deciding not to trigger the clause just two months after penning the new contract.
However, the French giants have no leverage in the situation. They could decide to bench Mbappe, who claims he wants to see out his contract, but relegating their best player to warm the bench will only turn the fans against them.
PSG claims that the heavy investment in Mbappe’s contract renewal ‘can only form part of a future transfer or continuity beyond June 2024’, which was the original agreement with the player.
Les Parisiens have given Mbappe and his representatives a July 31 deadline to plot their next course of action before they begin scouring the market for potential buyers.
There seems to be no end in sight regarding the ongoing feud between both parties. Meanwhile, rumour has it that Liverpool have launched an outrageous €200 million offer to sign Mbappe.
Real Madrid are in pole position to sign the former AS Monaco prodigy, but they are currently monitoring the situation while preparing a mega bid for the French superstar.
