Mauricio Pochettino charges Chelsea to deliver from day one at his first press conference

New Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino held his first press conference since returning to the Premier League.

The Argentine manager was quick to define his vision for next season. The 51-year-old has ordered his players to be prepared to win from day one.

Pochettino knows there is no patience in modern football. He knows this more than anyone after being sacked by Tottenham Hotspur five months after he led them to the Champions League final.

The former centre-back announced that his Chelsea side must prepare quickly enough for the new season.

Pochettino said (via the Daily Mail): “You need to deliver from day one. I am not trying to think about challenges.

“First, we need a balanced squad. We wanted to reduce the number of players.

“In football, there is no patience. It is difficult to wait. You need to deliver from day one. That is why we are how we are.

“It is about the delivery from now. We cannot tell people we need six months. We need belief from the beginning.

“If we need more time, maybe it is possible we will say it then, but we need to be ready to beat Liverpool.”

Chelsea face the Reds in their first Premier League game of the 2023/24 campaign.

Jurgen Klopp’s side had a disappointing campaign by their standards and will be looking to bounce back from their fifth-place finish last season.

Chelsea have an even bigger gap to close after finishing 12th, but the new manager wants to see progress early.

Pochettino also dismissed the notion that he was unwilling to work with Chelsea’s bloated squad and urged fans to get behind the team.

He said: “I want to give the people who put their trust in me everything. I need to build a relationship with the fans. They know me because of my past, but I am now committed to Chelsea.

“The fans need to engage with the idea and philosophy, and we can create something special. We can win if we believe and are all together.”
