Barcelona hold talks with Real Valladolid full-back Ivan Fresneda

Barcelona have reportedly stepped up their efforts to sign Real Valladolid full-back Ivan Fresneda.

According to Mundo Deportivo, sporting director Deco has met with Fresneda’s agent to discuss a potential summer move.

The Spaniard’s name is high on the list of potential targets, with Barca manager Xavi keen on strengthening the right-back position heading into the new season.

Jules Kounde and Ronald Araujo were used as makeshift right-backs due to a lack of depth last season and Xavi wants to address the situation.

Sergino Dest, who has returned from his loan spell at AC Milan, is not in his plans meaning there is a pressing need for a right-back in the summer transfer window.

Fresneda, 18, is one of the most exciting prospects in Europe, gaining prominence following an excellent breakout season in La Liga.

However, Barca’s financial situation could complicate a deal for the Spanish teenager.

Fresneda has a release clause worth €15 million, but Barca are not planning to spend more than €10m due to issues with Financial Fair Play (FFP).

Several top European clubs, including AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund and Arsenal, are willing to meet his valuation, leaving Barca in a race against time.

Barca also have Joao Cancelo on their wishlist, but a move looks implausible due to his expensive fee.

The Catalan giants have completed the signings of Ilkay Gundogan and Inigo Martinez on free transfers and are set to follow up with Vitor Roque, who is expected to move to Camp Nou at the start of 2024.

However, these signings will only paper over the cracks as they need a quality full-back to compete at the highest level next season.

Barca must maximise their efforts to reduce their significant wage bill to comply with FFP, which would provide them with more leeway in the transfer market.
