Sheffield Wednesday confirm ex-Watford boss Xisco Munoz as manager

Sheffield Wednesday have announced they have appointed Xisco Munoz as their new manager.

The 42-year-old will replace Darren Moore who surprisingly left the club last month after leading his side to promotion from League One via the play-offs.

However, owner Dejphon Chansiri later revealed Moore departed the Hillsborough Stadium due to the financial demands he made over signing a new deal.

The Owls were linked with Dean Smith and Slaven Bilic to fill the vacancy but have now confirmed Munoz as their new boss.

The Championship club’s statement read: “Sheffield Wednesday are delighted to announce the appointment of Xisco Munoz as our first team manager.

“The Spaniard, who gained promotion to the Premier League with Watford in 2020/21, takes charge of the Owls with immediate effect.”

Munoz has been out of a job since being sacked by Cypriot outfit Anorthosis in January.

He lasted only three months in Famagusta, with the club dismissing him after a five-game winless run.

However, the 42-year-old did a commendable job during his previous managerial stint at Watford.

He took charge of the Hornets in December 2020 and led his side to Premier League promotion after an excellent run of form.

He was sacked after only seven top-flight games, with Watford sitting 15th in the top flight.

Munoz, who started his football career as a winger, has also had stints at Dinamo Tbilisi and Huesca.

He guided Tbilisi to the league title in Georgia and also performed a decent job at Huesca.
