Paris Saint-Germain have communicated their desire to activate the buy-back clause for PSV Eindhoven striker Xavi Simons.
That’s according to Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who says the Ligue 1 champions are ready to trigger the clause that will allow them to re-sign the Dutch wonderkid for as low as €6 million.
Simons came through the youth ranks at Barcelona before joining PSG’s under-19 side. However, the battle for regular playing time forced a premature exit from Parc des Princes.
Fully aware of the Dutchman’s huge potential, the record Ligue 1 champions inserted a buy-back clause in the deal that saw Simons join PSV on a free transfer last summer.
Back on home soil, the former Barcelona prodigy grabbed his opportunity with both hands, lighting up Eredivisie with several eye-catching performances that have seen his value skyrocket.
The 20-year-old finished as the joint-top scorer in the Dutch top flight with 19 goals and nine assists in 34 league appearances. He also hit double figures for goal contribution across all competitions (22 goals, 12 assists).
Following a remarkable debut campaign with the Dutch giants, Simons could return to the French capital as early as this summer, with PSG keen to act on their advantage.
Valued at €40m by Transfermarkt, several on-lookers across Europe have already begun registering interest in the Netherlands international, but PSG are in pole position to recapture his signature and for a meagre fee.
Simons was previously reluctant to return to France amid fears he could struggle for playing time, but he looks to have had a change of heart – although he is yet to make a final decision on his long-term future.
PSG are undergoing a significant squad rebuild. Lionel Messi has already departed the club to join Inter Miami, and Kylian Mbappe could follow the seven-time Balon d’Or winner through the exit after refusing to pen a new deal.
With significant changes happening at the club, Simons could establish himself as a pivotal figure in the squad, while PSG could solve their striker dilemma without spending a large chunk of their transfer budget.
