PSG announce Christophe Galtier departure, Luis Enrique set to take over

Paris Saint-Germain have announced the long-awaited departure of head coach Christophe Galtier after just one year in charge.

Galtier helped PSG retain their Ligue 1 crown, although by the slimmest of margins, with RC Lens sitting just one point behind them in the league rankings.

The 56-year-old also lifted the Trophee des Champions while recording 2.16 points per match during his 50-match tenure at Parc des Princes.

Despite winning the league in his debut campaign, the powers-that-be at the French capital have decided to move on from the former Lille man following a disappointing appearance on the continental stage.

PSG are driven by an obsessive desire to finally land the elusive Champions League title, and crashing out in the round of 16 does not cut it for the club’s bosses.

Elimination at the hands of Olympique Marseille in the Coupe de France round of 16 also did not help Galtier’s chances of retaining his job, and PSG are looking to snap up someone with more European pedigree than the French tactician.

Former Barcelona manager Luis Enrique is expected to take over the reins of the prestigious club following Galtier’s dismissal.

Enrique’s impressive coaching pedigree, having previously managed Barca and the Spanish national team, saw him emerge as the front-runner for the PSG hot seat.

The 53-year-old has been a free agent since leaving his role with the Spanish national team in December last year and had expressed a desire to coach in the Premier League, but nothing materialised.

He was also previously linked with the vacant job at Napoli. But the Italian champions opted to sign Rudi Garcia instead, leaving PSG home-free in the race to capture his signature.

Enrique’s successful stint in Catalonia, where he guided the team to a remarkable treble, makes him an ideal candidate to lead PSG’s quest for glory, especially on the European stage.
