Atletico Madrid, Benfica, and Feyenoord eye move for Jonathan Varane

Feyenoord, Atletico Madrid and Benfica have reportedly set their sights on midfielder Jonathan Varane, according to AS

The 21-year-old currently plays in the Spanish second tier for Sporting Gijon and recently signed a new deal until 2027.

The midfielder is the half-brother of Manchester United defender Raphael Varane.

He moved from RC Lens to Gijon last year having progressed through the Lens academy like his elder brother.

Varane featured in 17 matches for Gijon in the Segunda Division, helping his team secure a 17th-place finish.

The Lille-born player became a regular towards the end of the season, starting the final ten games of the 2022/23 season.

Gijon have placed a €5 million price tag on Varane, who extended his contract with the club in May.

Feyenoord want to bolster their squad following their 16th Eredivisie title win.

The Dutch giants have already signed midfielders Ramiz Zerrouki from FC Twente and Thomas van den Belt from PEC Zwolle this summer.

Head coach Arne Slot has Mats Wieffer and Quinten Timber as central midfield options, but Varane would provide additional depth, youth and competition.

Benfica, who are looking to defend their Primeira Liga title, are also searching for midfield reinforcements.

They have already acquired the services of Orkun Kokcu from Feyenoord but are eager to make further additions to strengthen their squad.

Atletico Madrid are another option for Varane. They have finalised deals for Javi Galan, Cesar Azpilicueta, Caglar Soyuncu and Santiago Mourino.

The Spanish powerhouse has turned attention to midfield replacements following Geoffrey Kondogbia’s departure to Marseille.

Sporting director Andrea Berta is exploring various options and Varane is a potential target to fill the void left by the departing French midfielder.
