Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk is looking forward to the 2023-24 campaign off the back of an underwhelming season for Liverpool.
Having come close to a quadruple last season, Liverpool were tipped to contend for major trophies once again this term but the Reds have flattered to deceive, to say the least.
Jurgen Klopp’s side failed to defend both domestic cups in disappointing fashion, while their European journey ended in a 6-2 aggregate defeat to Real Madrid.
Following a 1-1 draw against Aston Villa yesterday, Liverpool’s hopes of qualifying for Champions League dreams are all but over but Van Dijk is confident of an improved display next season.
“I’m very excited for next season,” Van Dijk said, as relayed by The Athletic.
“Obviously there’s still a lot to work on, but the good thing in this case is that we have the whole pre-season to do that.
“Pre-season will be massive for us. Everybody knows we’ve been going through a little bit of a transition.
“The noises I’m hearing, it’s going to be a very intense pre-season with a lot of physical work but also a lot of tactical work – that’s very exciting.
“Players are leaving, but players are coming in and we’ll be ready for the start.”
Despite being set to make do with a place in the Europa League, Van Dijk is confident that Liverpool can attract top players in the upcoming transfer window.
“If I’m a player on the rise and I have options to go to the next step, and Liverpool is knocking on my door, then I would be very, very interested,” the Dutchman added.
“I don’t think it’s going to change much but, if someone wants to play Champions League no matter what, then that’s their ambition.”
