Gianluigi Buffon rejects €30m Saudi Pro League offer, set to retire

Gianluigi Buffon has rejected a lucrative offer from the Saudi Pro League amounting to €30 million per year, according to Corriere Della Sera.

The rejection signifies that the former Juventus goalie is edging closer to retirement.

Several football stars have left Europe for the Middle East this summer, including Karim Benzema, N’Golo Kante, Ruben Neves, Kadlidou Koulibaly and Edouard Mendy.

Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) has taken over four clubs and are keen on recruiting several European superstars to bring more attention to their domestic league.

However, Buffon wants to remain closer to home. The former Paris Saint-Germain shot-stopper has taken into account factors such as his fitness and mental energy.

He will consider the pressure of playing professional football before deciding on his future.

Although Buffon’s contract with his boyhood club Parma ends in 2024, the club will respect his decision if he chooses to retire.

Buffon’s contribution to the sport cannot be overstated. With an incredible record of 975 games in Serie A, he has become a living legend in Italian football.

His record 176 appearances for the Italy national team make him one the most capped players in international football.

Buffon has displayed immense skill and talent while influencing the sport in Italy throughout his career.

His exceptional goalkeeping abilities, leadership qualities and unwavering dedication have earned him the admiration and respect of fans worldwide.

Buffon will forever remember him as one of the greatest goalkeepers to play the game.

Whether he chooses to retire or continue for another season, his legacy as a football icon is secure.
