Ruben Loftus-Cheek joins AC Milan from Chelsea

Ruben Loftus-Cheek has left Chelsea after 19 years at the club and is heading for AC Milan in Serie A.

The Rossoneri paid €16 million with an additional €4m in add-ons. He joins Milan on a four-year contract until 2027.

Loftus-Cheek joined the Blues as an eight-year-old and progressed through the ranks before debuting as a 19-year-old under Jose Mourinho.

He enjoyed tremendous success at youth level, helping Chelsea win the Youth Cup twice, Premier League 2 and the UEFA Youth League.

The Lewisham-born midfielder made 155 appearances for the senior Chelsea team, bagging 13 goals and 18 assists.

He won the Premier League, Europa League and Super Cup. He had loan spells at Fulham and Crystal Palace.

Injuries have halted his development, and the England international has stalled at Chelsea. He has moved to Serie A to reinvigorate his career.

He joins fellow Chelsea academy product Fikayo Tomori in Milan, and United States forward Christian Pulisic could join them soon.

Loftus-Cheek will replace Newcastle United-bound Sandro Tonali. Like Tonali, he is a box-to-box midfielder and will hope to make the same impact as the Italian.

They also need a replacement for Brahim Diaz, who has returned to Real Madrid after spending the last two seasons on loan in Italy. They are targeting AZ Alkmaar’s Tijjani Reijnders.

Milan need a new attacker for the right flank and are talking with Villarreal about a move for Samuel Chukwueze.

Both clubs are still far apart in their valuations, but the transfer talks are continuing.
