Liverpool have reached an agreement to sign RB Leipzig midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Reds have informed the Bundesliga club that they will trigger the player’s release clause, which is reportedly worth €70 million.
Liverpool have also agreed personal terms with Szoboszlai’s camp – only medical examinations remain before the transfer is officially announced by both clubs.
Szoboszlai is on the cusp of leaving Leipzig just a year and a half after joining from sister club RB Salzburg for around €22m.
Despite his short stay at the Red Bull Arena, the 22-year-old proved a shrewd acquisition for Die Roten Bullen, helping them to two DFB Pokal titles.
The Hungarian midfielder, who is famed for his flair, trickery and ball-striking ability, made 91 appearances for Leipzig, scoring 20 times and assisting 22.
He was instrumental in their successful campaign last season, notching 23 goal contributions – including a goal in the DFB Pokal final – as they defended their German Cup crown and secured Champions League qualification.
Newcastle United were also keen on the former Salzburg man but pulled out of the race for his signature, handing Liverpool a massive boost in their quest to add him to their squad.
Szoboszlai is set to become the second signing of the Premier League transfer window for Jurgen Klopp’s side after Alexis Mac Allister, who completed a move from Brighton & Hove Albion.
Liverpool’s midfield revamp is shaping up nicely, with the Reds snapping up two hugely impressive talents without paying over £100m.
However, their spending spree could cross that figure if they are successful in the pursuit of OGC Nice midfielder Kephren Thuram.
More incoming transfers will be needed at Anfield this summer, with Klopp desperate to avoid a repeat of last season’s disappointment, where they finished outside the top four.
Szobozlai’s deal is the second time Liverpool and Leipzig are doing business this summer after the Germans completed an unprecedented simple loan signing of Reds youngster Fabio Carvalho.
