Patrick Vieira has emerged as a potential candidate for the vacant managerial role at Ligue 1 club Strasbourg, according to RMC Sport.
Clearlake Capital bought the club weeks ago through their football holding company BlueCo.
BlueCo owns Chelsea and acquired Strasbourg as part of a multi-club model.
They decided to part ways with Frederic Antonetti, a seasoned coach known for his expertise in avoiding relegation.
The current priority target for Strasbourg is former Union Saint-Gilloise coach Karel Geraerts. However, Vieira’s name has also entered the conversation.
Although he is not considered the front-runner at this stage, Strasbourg officials have engaged in discussions with the former Arsenal and France midfielder to explore the possibility of his appointment.
Vieira’s managerial experience includes stints at Crystal Palace and OGC Nice in the Premier League and Ligue 1.
His tenure at both clubs showcased his ability to navigate a challenging league environment.
He implemented an attractive and attacking style of play. However, his Crystal Palace stint ended with the team on a 12-game losing streak.
They faced the danger of a relegation battle before Roy Hodgson came in and steadied the ship.
Strasbourg’s search for a new coach extends beyond Vieira and Geraerts. The club is conducting a comprehensive enquiry to ensure they find the right fit.
Other contenders on the shortlist include Sabri Lamouchi and Philippe Montanier.
Antonetti’s departure from Strasbourg follows a successful tenure, during which he secured 22 points in 15 matches.
It was a remarkable achievement considering the unique circumstances of the season.
Ligue 1 reduced the number of teams from 20 to 18, meaning four clubs were relegated instead of three.
As Strasbourg’s search for a new head coach continues, the links with Vieira add an intriguing dynamic.
Championship club Leeds United also have him on their shortlist, but he has not decided on his next career move.
Whether or not Vieira ultimately takes the helm at Strasbourg or any club remains unclear.
