Tottenham expect to sign James Maddison this week

Tottenham Hotspur have agreed personal terms with Leicester City playmaker James Maddison, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Spurs will continue their negotiations with the Foxes as they seek to agree on a fee for the attacking midfielder.

The 26-year-old is a top target for Tottenham, but they have been trying to knock down Leicester’s £60 million valuation of their star man.

Spurs want to offer £40m as a fixed fee plus add-ons.

Maddison bagged ten goals and nine assists last season, but he was unable to prevent Leicester slipping into the Championship.

Tottenham need a playmaker to make things happen in the final third and have targeted Maddison.

They must move quickly to snap him up before Newcastle United re-enter the frame to sign him.

He has been a target for the Magpies for some time, but they are trying to complete a deal for Sandro Tonali first.

Leicester rejected two bids for the England international last summer from Newcastle.

There were more links in January, but he stayed with the Foxes. He looks set to leave this summer and may be heading to London.

After signing Maddison, Spurs could return for his Leicester teammate Harvey Barnes. They want to sign him for new manager Ange Postecoglou.

They also need to sign defenders ahead of next season. Tottenham were poor defensively in the league last term, conceding 63 goals in 38 matches. Only five teams conceded more goals.

There will likely be a defensive overhaul with Davinson Sanchez preparing to leave and Clement Lenglet returning to Barcelona following his unremarkable loan spell in England.

Tottenham have been linked to several centre-backs but have not made a concrete move for anyone.
