Newcastle United turn to Dominik Szoboszlai as James Maddison nears Tottenham Hotspur move

Newcastle United are expected to make a move for RB Leipzig midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai if they miss out on a deal for Leicester City’s James Maddison, reports Sky Sports.

Newcastle have just enjoyed one of their best campaigns in recent years. They reached the Carabao Cup final and qualified for the Champions League for the first time since 2003.

With a busier schedule to contend with, and the expectations rising, manager Eddie Howe will require additional depth in his squad. A new attacking midfielder appears to be near the top of the Magpies’ wish list.

England international James Maddison is a known target following his relegation with Leicester City. However, Tottenham Hotspur are leading the race for his signature.

Newcastle will look to alternative options, and Szoboszlai is on their radar.

The 22-year-old first made his name as a youngster at RB Salzburg. He made 83 appearances in all competitions for the Austrian outfit from 2018 to 2021, scoring 26 goals.

This earned him a €20 million move to Leipzig in January 2021, making him the most expensive Hungarian player in history.

He has continued to impress in the Bundesliga, recording 12 goals and 16 assists in 62 league appearances.

Additionally, he netted the second goal for Die Roten Bullen in their 2-0 DFB Pokal final victory over Eintracht Frankfurt earlier this month.

If Newcastle make a move, they will have to muster up a massive fee for the 32-cap Hungary international. He has a reported €70m release clause, which is only active until the end of June.

This may prove to be a stumbling block for the Tyneside outfit, as they are believed to be operating on a limited budget.

A deal for AC Milan’s Sandro Tonali is close to completion, leaving them with little room for big-money arrivals.
