Further information surrounding Manchester United’s contract saga with David De Gea has surfaced, with the goalkeeper’s future at Old Trafford still hanging in the balance.
According to The Athletic, both parties had previously agreed a contract extension, with the Spanish shot-stopper significantly reducing his enormous wages.
However, Man United pulled out of the deal at the last minute only to offer De Gea, whose current contract runs out at the end of June, an even lower salary proposal.
Man United’s purported fiasco has stalled negotiations with the former Atletico Madrid man, who is now considering his long-term future in Manchester.
De Gea currently earns a mammoth £375,000 per week at Old Trafford, making him the highest-paid goalkeeper in world football. He is also the highest-paid Spanish player across the globe.
However, the 32-year-old was willing to reduce his massive earnings to continue with the Red Devils, but the club did not sign the contract agreement.
De Gea is yet to accept Man United’s fresh proposal, but talks are reportedly still ongoing as both parties look to find common ground on the revised salary package.
He is already attracting interest from Saudi Arabia, who are keen to bolster their reputation in world football by attracting some of the biggest stars in Europe.
Man United are already preparing for life without De Gea between the sticks, with the Red Devils eyeing a move for Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana.
Man United are keen on the Cameroonian shot-stopper, but they will face competition from Premier League rivals Chelsea who are also in the market for a new number one.
Dean Henderson, who spent last season on loan at Nottingham Forest, will return to Old Trafford this summer. But it remains to be seen if he will be handed a starting berth if De Gea leaves.
