Barcelona announce signing of free agent Ilkay Gundogan

Barcelona have announced the much-awaited transfer of German midfielder Ilkay Gundogan from Manchester City.

Barca reached an agreement with the German international last week, with his previous deal at Man City expiring this month.

As noted in the club statement, Gundogan will pen a new two-year deal with Barca until 2025 with an option of an additional year. His release clause has been set at €400 million.

The 32-year-old is the Catalan giants’ first signing of the summer, and he is joining them on the back of an extraordinary season, where he played a key role in City winning the treble.

It adds to his illustrious legacy with the Sky Blues, having won five Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups and a Champions League trophy.

Pep Guardiola recently commented that if Gundogan were to move to Barca, the Catalan club would be getting a top-class player.

Gundogan also confirmed his exit from the Etihad Stadium on social media, stating that he will remain a City player forever.

With Sergio Busquets leaving Barca after 18 years, the La Liga Champions are signing another high-quality midfielder in Gundogan.

Gundogan will link up with his compatriot Marc-Andre ter Stegen and his former Borussia Dortmund teammate Robert Lewandowski at Camp Nou.

Lewandowski and Gundogan inspired Die Borussen to the brink of Champions League glory in 2012/13 – losing to Bayern Munich in the final – and the expectations will be huge for the duo to repeat a similar feat next season.

After Gundogan’s arrival, Barca are expected to follow up with the signing of Vitor Roque from Athletico Paranaense, with an agreement on a five-year deal reached between the two parties.

Barca also have an agreement in place for the free transfer of Inigo Martinez from Athletic Bilbao.
