Newcastle United have pulled off one of the biggest signings of the Premier League transfer window so far by snapping up Sandro Tonali from AC Milan, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Off the back of a series of negotiations between Newcastle and Milan, the two clubs have finally reached an agreement for the transfer of Tonali for an initial fee of €70 million plus add-ons.
Tonali will put pen to paper on a six-year deal with his new employers on an annual salary of €7m, which could rise by a further €2m.
Eclipsing Jorginho’s move to Chelsea from Napoli in 2018, Tonali is now the most expensive Italian player of all time which is a testament to his huge potential.
The 23-year-old majorly operates as a central midfielder but can also play deeper when needed thanks to his incredible combination of athleticism, technicality and physique.
Kicking off what is expected to be a busy window at St James’ Park, Tonali is Newcastle’s first summer addition as they prepare for a return to the Champions League.
Racking up 71 points from 38 matches during the recently-concluded campaign, the Magpies finished fourth in the Premier League and will play in Europe’s premier club competition for the first time since 2003.
Newcastle will have to wait a little longer to see their new acquisition in action for the first time as he is currently on international duty at the ongoing Under-21 European Championship in Romania.
Tonali put on a superb display against France yesterday, where he assisted his side’s only goal of the game in a narrow 2-1 loss.
He and Italy will now be looking to bounce back from an opening defeat on Sunday when they face off against Switzerland in their second group-stage encounter.
