West Ham fans handed UEFA ban after Conference League final trouble

West Ham have been handed a supporters ban in Europe after the ugly events that occurred in their Europa Conference League final against Fiorentina.

David Moyes’ side earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Italians in Prague, with Jarrod Bowen snatching the winner in the dying embers of the game.

Bowen’s strike earned the Hammers their first major trophy in over four decades and secured Europa League qualification despite their awful Premier League campaign.

However, their historic success was tainted by the actions of West Ham supporters during the fierce, evenly-contested encounter.

La Viola captain Cristiano Biraghi was badly cut after being struck by an object hurled onto the pitch by West Ham thugs while waiting to take a corner.

The Italy international required bandages for the injury, and Fiorentina later condemned West Ham supporters for their actions at the Eden Arena that they claimed affected the outcome of the match.

Minutes before the Biraghi incident, the Hammers fans threw objects at his teammate Nico Gonzalez.

Their actions were perhaps in retaliation to the assault they suffered from Fiorentina hooligans before the game, which led to multiple arrests.

However, UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body have punished West Ham, which will prevent fans from attending the club’s first two away trips in Europe next term.

In addition to the supporter ban, West Ham have also been fined €58,000.
