Barcelona set to sign Man City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan

Barcelona will sign Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan when his contract expires this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano.

They have received the green light from La Liga and will sign him up on a two-year deal until 2025.

The 32-year-old was a top target for the Catalans as they sought to revitalise their midfield with some experience following the departure of stalwart Sergio Busquets.

Barcelona needed to sort their finances to push ahead with the deal to sign Gundogan, and they have now got their man.

The former German international leaves Manchester after seven incredibly successful seasons in which he won the Premier League five times, the FA Cup, League Cup and Champions League.

Gundogan played crucial parts in those titles, scoring several important goals.

The former Borussia Dortmund midfielder bagged 11 goals and seven assists as City claimed the treble this season. His last act in a City shirt was lifting the UCL title as captain.

Gundogan has made 340 appearances for the Cityzens since joining them, scoring 60 goals and assisting another 40.

With his contract set to expire at the end of this month, several clubs showed interest in taking him.

Arsenal considered a move for Gundogan, while his former club Dortmund considered bringing him back. But he was never keen to return to his country.

There were rumours of a move to Paris Saint-Germain, but nothing materialised.

City did try to keep Gundogan, but he has his heart set on a move to Barca.

He will be a top option for Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez as they bid to retain their La Liga title and compete in the Champions League.
