Former Ajax attacker Quincy Promes has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for assaulting his cousin, according to ESPN.
The court found the Spartak Moscow star guilty of aggravated assault but did not find any evidence of attempted murder or manslaughter.
The court ordered Promes to pay his nephew €7,000 compensation for damages.
Despite Promes’ denial, the court deemed there was enough evidence to support his cousin’s claims.
Two eyewitnesses and intercepted conversations were crucial in establishing Promes’ involvement.
Conversations on the footballer’s phone explicitly mentioned the stabbing of his cousin, further supporting the prosecution’s case.
Promes initially claimed another family member was the perpetrator, but the court dismissed this account, citing a lack of evidence.
The court emphasised that no witnesses saw Promes specifically aiming at vital organs.
However, app conversations revealed he wanted to strike his nephew in the neck during emotionally charged discussions.
The court criticised Promes for failing to attend the hearing or express any remorse. Had he done so and provided an account of the incident, his sentence would have been six months less.
The 31-year-old still has the option to appeal the conviction.
Promes is also facing prosecution for his alleged involvement in drug trafficking.
The Amsterdam criminal investigation department has approached him twice regarding his associations with known criminals.
The Public Prosecution Service has now decided to take legal action against the player for his suspected role in importing significant cocaine shipments weighing over 1,370 kilos.
Authorities intercepted the shipment at the port of Antwerp in January 2020.
Promes’ legal troubles have cast a shadow over his football career, and it remains unclear how these legal proceedings will impact his future in the sport.
