Chelsea in talks with Villarreal to sign Nicolas Jackson, personal terms not a problem

Chelsea are in talks with Villarreal to sign young striker Nicolas Jackson after a breakout season in Spain, according to Sky Sports.

The Blues are not worried about personal terms as talks with representatives of the 21-year-old have been positive.

They have earmarked him as one of the options to improve their striking department.

Chelsea are ready to pay his €35 million release clause. They are talking to Villarreal about the payment structure and incentives to sweeten the deal.

Jackson is one of several strikers Chelsea have on their radar. With the other options looking too expensive, he may be leading Chelsea’s attack next season.

He was due to join Bournemouth in the Premier League six months ago, but a hamstring injury prevented the transfer.

Jackson started last season slowly but exploded towards the end with nine goals in eight games to help his side finish fifth in La Liga.

The Gambia-born striker finished the league campaign with 12 goals (8.03 xG) and four assists.

Jackson ranks in the 94th percentile for non-penalty goals per 90, and he records this number with minimal shots.

He is also an efficient passer despite attempting few per game and records impressive progressive passing and carrying numbers. Jackson recorded the second most dribble attempts in La Liga last season.

Despite all the intangibles, there are concerns about whether he is ready to lead the line for Chelsea. He does not have the most impressive numbers, even though he is a promising prospect.

Chelsea are preparing to sell strikers Kai Havertz and Romelu Lukaku this summer. They will need a new figure to spearhead their attack if the duo leave and could turn to Jackson.
